Issues and Trends in the Botanical Dietary Supplement Market
Mark Blumenthal, Founder and Executive Director, American Botanical Council (ABC)
The growth of herbs and medicinal plant products for health is a global phenomenon. Market statistics suggest, despite the recent world economic downturn, consumers and health professionals are still purchasing, using and/or recommending herbal products. This presentation will review recent economic trend data from the United States, including which single herbs are the top-selling botanicals. Mark Blumenthal will cover recent media coverage, particularly in cases where the media have misinformed and/or miss communicated the results of scientific and clinical research. In addition, issues related to quality control and GMPs will be discussed, as well as American Botanical Council’s (ABC) new Solvents Project—a comprehensive review of the types of industrial solvents used in botanical extracts and natural food ingredients. This perennial favorite is one of Blumenthal’s most popular discussions, and is constantly changing to include the most recent research on market, regulatory issues and media coverage.
New Emerging Nutrients: Future Best-Sellers
Michael Murray, N.D., Director of Product Development and Education for Natural Factors
The term "anutrient" was used in the past to describe food compounds without considerable health benefits. The term was used for compounds such as dietary fiber, flavonoids, non-vitamin A carotenoids and many other phytochemicals. Given the tremendous importance of these compounds to human nutrition, this term is now antiquated. In this dynamic session, Dr. Murray will highlight the expanding definition of what should be considered a nutrient, show the critical role that these conditionally essential nutrients and compounds play in specific clinical indications, and feature some natural product candidates that might be best sellers in the future.
Retailers at Risk? Do’s and Don’ts
in the Sale of Dietary Supplements
Anthony L. Young, Partner, Kleinfeld, Kaplan and Becker, LLP
Labeling a supplement for prevention or treatment of a disease makes that product an unapproved drug, and making drug-type claims for dietary supplements online is asking for a “Stop that!” letter from the FDA or the FTC, or both. But what does it mean to retailers who have to respond to customers asking about natural products to address serious health issues; surely sharing information on beneficial products can’t be a problem, right? WRONG! In the Retailers at Risk? Webinar, you’ll learn how the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act applies to retail sales, how to protect your store and educate your employees.
Supplementing Your Prescription
Hyla Cass, M.D., Author, Consultant
Most medications will cause nutrient depletion, leading to a variety of side effects for your shoppers. Hyla Cass, M.D., will explain the underlying dynamics, and provide specific information to help consumers recognize and address nutrient depletion. For example, the statins will deplete coenzymeQ10 (CoQ10), causing fatigue, myalgia and increased risk for cardiac disease. H2 blockers can deplete calcium, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, leading to osteoporosis and depression. Blood-sugar lowering diabetes drugs such as glucophage can lead to deficiencies in folic acid and vitamin B12, in turn increasing the risk for heart disease. Dr. Cass will provide specific corrective nutritional supplement protocols, as well as natural alternatives to these medications.
